JFCS offers a variety of Parents Place, mental health, and senior services on the Peninsula.  Please scroll down to view Parents Place workshops and volunteer programs. We look forward to serving you and your family.

SAVE THE DATE!  Tuesday, March 13, 2007, Navigating Learning Disabilities, A Resource Event for Parents and Professionals, 4:30 to 8:30 PM, 200 Channing Avenue, Palo Alto.  The event includes 20 exhibitors, a keynote speech, parent information booth, student panel, simulation center and a book fair. $25/sliding scale available. FREE Support Group for Families Dealing With Serious Mental Illness

In partnership with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, JFCS offers a support group the fourth Tuesday of every month.  The next meeting will be held on February 27 and March 27 from 7 - 9 p.m.   Symptoms, medications, resources, relapse and recovery will be discussed in a full, supportive environment.  The meetings are open to all.  For further information or to sign up please call Don Sussman, LCSW, 650-688-3046 or DonS@jfcs.org.

 

FREE Meal Delivery Program for Adults and Children with Disabilities
"Chicken Soupers," is a  program of JFCS primarily for members of the Jewish community with disabilities or chronic illness who would benefit from delicious home-cooked meals and healthy snacks to nourish the body and uplift the spirit. Family members caring for an adult or child with an illness or disability are also eligible. FREE, Job Strategy Group
Jewish Vocational Services is offering this free monthly workshop at JFCS in Palo Alto.  Are you looking for a job?  The Job Search Strategy Group is a resource to help you wherever you are in your job search. This session is facilitated by an expert in the field, but the discussion is led by you, the job seeker, as the group works together to strategize about job search techniques and overcoming challenges.  The next session will be Friday, February 23, 1 - 3 p.m.  For information, contact Sarah Accomazzo, 415-782-6253 or saccomazzo@jvs.org.
 
Cafe by the Bay for  Holocaust Survivors
Join us for the the monthly social event for survivors.  On February 7, we'll attend a performance of the one-woman show, ROSE, by the Traveling Jewish Theater. New Program Announcement: Single Parent Center

This program was created for Jewish single parent families in the Bay Area who are low income or living in poverty. It will provide counseling, parenting classes, resource and referrals to local community based organizations, job training, financial management, childcare referrals ,and support groups as well as other services identified by the family. NEW Support Group for Parents of Children with Juvenile Diabetes

This 6-session support group offers parents with diabetic children a chance to meet and talk about family life with a diabetic child.  The goal will be to  enable parents to join together to look into the emotional and practical issues of families living with diabetes.  Meets second Tuesday of each month, beginning February 13, 7:30 - 9 p.m. with Erica Pelavin, LCSW, PhD.  $10 per session.  For information or to register contact Don Sussman, 650-688-3046 or dons@jfcs.org.

 

Coping with Chronic Illness and Disabilities

This informative and supportive group welcomes adults ages 18-60 who are coping with issues related to chronic illness and disabilities.  Group discussion will include healthy coping strategies, enhancing self-esteem, changing life roles, reducing isolation, dealing with family and friends, and other relevant issues. Meets monthly, second Wednesday, 1:30 - 3 p.m. beginning February 14.  Fee, $5 donation requested, Medi-Cal accepted. Pre-registration and a group membership interview required. Single Again Separation/Divorce Support Group

This is a six-week support group designed for individuals coping with separation or divorce.  Participants will discuss finding inner strengths; managing feelings of anger, loss, grief; helping children through the process; changing relationships with family and friends; building new relationships and accessing community resources.  Thursdays, beginning Winter 2007, 7 - 8:30 p.m., with Marlene Levenson, LCSW. $150 for 6 sessions. Grief Group

This ten-week group will address the isolation often felt by people who are grieving. Group members will learn from each other's experiences by sharing feelings and gaining support from each other for the pain and loss they are experiencing. Personal goals will be established and worked on throughout the group. Members will have the opportunity to explore their individual responses to loss using memorabilia, letter writing, and relaxation techiniques. Social Aniexty Group

This ten-week group is for people whose anxiety diminshes their pleasure in social relationships and situations. This non-judgemental group will explore the nature of social anxiety, negative thought patterns, and triggers in our daily interactions. We will develop individualized goals for more pleasurable social interactions and wil challenge our negative thoughts. We will practices techniques for interrupting the cycle of stress and anxiety. Begin From Within, Ongoing Support Group about Food and Weight 

This group provides a safe environment for people who have decided to make changes in their lifestyle and relationship to food and weight.  Meets every Monday, 7:30 to 9 PM, with Laurel Woodard, $30/session.  Pre-registration is required.  Call Laurel Woodard, LMFT, at 650-688-3073 or LaurelW@jfcs.org. 
 
Mental Health Counseling 

We are a non-sectarian mental health center. Our staff of licensed professional therapists and psychologists can assist you and your family through life's transitions and difficulties, help you overcome fears or stumbling blocks in your life, or just provide an expert listener. We offer sessions for individuals, couples, families, or children. We can also offer crisis financial assistance. SeniorsAtHome (SAH)

Do you or a loved one need assistance with personal care or activities of daily living? Do you have concerns regarding upcoming care needs, living arrangements or financial management for an elderly parent? Call SeniorsAtHome for caring, proprofessional advice and assistance. We provide services on the Peninsula, in San Francisco and Marin. Our centralized intake and referral specialists can be reached at (415) 449-3777.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT PARENTS PLACE
Parents Place is a a caring, inclusive family resource center that gives families access to the support, tools and services needed to raise healthy children. All workshops and events listed below will be held at Parents Place locations in Palo Alto at 200 Channing Avenue, corner of Emerson Street, Palo Alto or San Mateo, 2001 Winward Way, adjacent to Mariner's Island Blvd/Edgewater  PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR ALL EVENTS, except drop-in groups.  To register, call 650-688-3040 or register online at www.ParentsPlaceOnline.org. Workshops are also offered at your agency or business upon request.
 
NEW at Parents Place Express
Parents Place Express offers community-based workshops to meet the needs of working parents with babies and small children, those with school age children, and teens. Parent Coaching and Consultation
Do you have concerns or questions about your child's development, interactions or behaviors?  Our expert Parent Educators have helped hundreds of families through individual parent and family consultation services. Our staff will spend time with you in order to assess, plan and recommend the best options for your situation.  We can also observe your child at his/her preschool if you have questions about his/her development.  Areas of expertise include behavior and discipline, sleep habits, potty training, temperament, finding quality preschool and childcare settings.  Call us at 650-688-3040.

Parent Child Activity Groups
Drop-In Play Groups (Hours until the end of this year) - Tuesdays, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Wednesdays, 3 - 4:30 p.m., and Thursdays, 10 - 11:30 a.m. Come enjoy our wonderful playroom with your child.  $30 for 5 sessions. No pre-registration is necessary.

Terrific Twos - Preparing for Preschool (2 - 3 years), Discussion for parents includes development and discipline.  Separate playgroup for children: a wonderful first separation experience. Turn Your Car Into Care
You can turn your CAR into CARE for at-risk children and families in our community by donating it to Parents Place. We pick up the car and handle the paperwork. You receive its value as a tax deduction. All you need to do is call 1-877-800-HUGS.
FEATURED VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteer Receptionist in San Mateo - We are in need of an evening receptionist, Monday - Thursday in our San Mateo office, 5 - 7:30 p.m.  Please contact Bobbi Bornstein, 650-688-3090.

 

 

Become a Senior Companion  Volunteers are matched by interest and geography and receive ongoing training and support. Minimum commitment is once a week for 6 months.     For information on this important volunteer experience or to volunteer, call Bobbi at 650-688-3090 or BobbiB@jfcs.org

 
Adults and teens, volunteer to share a  Shabbat evening with seniors, once a month, at an assisted living facility.  Training is provided. For information on this volunteer opportunity,  contact Bobbi at 650-688-3090 or BobbiB@jfcs.org.

Public Issues Committee seeking members- If you are interested in political advocacy, join this exciting committee. We tackle many of the legislative issues affecting children, adults with disabilities, immigrants, and seniors. Includes a trip to Sacramento as part of an Advocacy Day.
