Successful Swim Party -- July 21, 2002

More than 45 participants (21 adults and 24 children) splashed together in a pool and shared a delicious summer potluck (with an emphasis on pie and other desserts). The colorful--and wet--participants represented the full spectrum of Jewish adoptive families: married, single, gay, domestic/international, multiracial, and prospective. Young thirty-something and gray-haired ponytail parents shared the pool with their babies, toddlers and extremely cool preteens, born in
the USA, Latin America, Russia and China.

The swim party has been an annual event for 7 years, graciously hosted by founding members Sheri and Phil Shemanski. Based on the turnout, it will be an annual event for many more.

The Shabbat Club -- July 19, 2002

Our Shabbat Club celebrated its one-year anniversary. Shabbat Club, the idea of innovative member Nancy Gans, is a natural for Stars of David--a Friday evening Shabbat potluck hosted by different families every three months. To respect the whole range of members' religious observance--from secular to Orthodox--the menu is dairy and vegetarian.

The four Shabbat Club dinners have been a great opportunity for members to get to know each other in small groups and a warm, informal atmosphere. One Shabbat Club dinner for families with infants and toddlers began at 5 PM and ended promptly at 7:30 for early bedtimes; other occasions featured people shmoozing late into the night. Shabbat Club combines Jews, Shabbat and food and facilitates good feelings and friendship.

FAIR: A local adoption group with international impact

We are lucky to share the Peninula/Bay area with an excellent adoption support group called FAIR: Families Adopting in Response. FAIR's charter is "a permanent loving family for every child..it's only FAIR."
