How to Help Us

The Jewish Adoption Listserv

First of all, what is a "Listserv"?

  1. A listserv ("list") is a mailing list for email users. It is a communication tool for people with a common interest.
  2. Email users subscribe to a list. They can modify subscription options, such as changing email addresses, receiving messages individually or bundled in a daily digest, etc. They can also suspend mail and cancel their subscription.
  3. Subscribers send messages to those on the list via a designated email address (e.g., Jewish-Adoption-List@Maelstrom.StJohns.edu). Messages pose questions, respond to the posts of others, or offer news and opinions.
  4. The listserv broadcasts each message to all subscribers.
  5. Some listservs are "moderated." Messages must be approved by a moderator (usually the listowner -- see below) before being broadcast to the subscribers. Other lists are unmoderated; that is, messages are sent to subscribers without screening or approval by a moderator.
  6. The list is managed by "Listowner(s)" who control who can subscribe, troubleshoot problems, etc.

There are many adoption listservs which are essentially forums for family members to discuss adoption issues, provide support to one another and use as a clearinghouse for information. The complete list of adoption listservs is posted at the COMEUNITY website, http://www.comeunity.com and is also available from the author, Allison Martin by email, cyberfam@cais.com. This list is also available in our files and was obtained at a workshop at the terrific FACE Conference in October, 1997 along with an extremely helpful booklet called "Using the Internet as an Effective Tool in Pre- and Post-Adoption Activities."

We offer a listserv for our members, as well as listservs for children of our members.

In addition, the Jewish Adoption Listserv is an active group open to SDI members and non-members alike.

What is the "Jewish Adoption Listserv"?

The Jewish adoption list was set up by and for Jews who have adopted children or are working on adoption. Topics include, but are not limited to, conversion issues, finding a suitable community and congregation, returning to Judaism in order to provide a religious foundation for adopted children, and bring children from other cultures into Jewish life.

The list also welcomes participation by Jews looking into adoption, Jewish adoptees, and experts in topics of interest to the list, as well as people involved in academic research. Although this list is not intended to serve as a commercial advertising vehicle, agencies, institutions, organizations and businesses working in areas of interest to Jewish adoptive parents and children may participate in discussion and sharing of information. Posts by these entities should not, however, be advertisements for their services.

The list is unmoderated. The listowner and moderator of the list is Roberta Ferdschneider, a Jewish, single adoptive parent of a daughter from China. She can be reached at RobyF@aol.com.

To subscribe: Send an email to Listserv@maelstrom.stjohns.edu and type "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the body of the message.

To contact the listowner: Send an email to: Jewish-Adoption-List@maelstrom.stjohns.edu

To change your subscription to the digest version (in which you receive all ofthe day's messages in one long e-mail, rather than receiving individual e-mails for each message), make a new e-mail; address:listserv@maelstrom.stjohns.edu

The subject is irrelevant.

The contents should be:
SET JEWISH-ADOPTION-LIST DIGESTS

To change back to the single-post version:
SET JEWISH-ADOPTION-LIST NODIGESTS

To temporarily turn off your mail from the list without actually unsubscribing:
SET JEWISH-ADOPTION-LIST NOMAIL

To start receiving mail again:
SET JEWISH-ADOPTION-LIST MAIL

To unsubscribe:
SIGNOFF JEWISH-ADOPTION-LIST

Please note that there should be nothing else in your e-mail, and spelling and punctuation are important! If you omit the hyphens or say "thanks" at the end, it won't work--the changes are done by a computer, not a human.
